The Chapel Café

The old Seafarers Mission Building situated on Haven Road, Nelson has had wonderful restoration and is now the Chapel Café. The original chapel has been left intact. It is a beautiful space with an elegant trussed ceiling.

The Restoration work was a major under taking and the attention to detail has won it the Top Of the South Heritage Category Architecture Awards.

Beautifully renovated building now starts a new chapter of its life as a cafe. The windows were added after the new owner, Emily Balaam, moved in. Along with the art and wrought ironwork, it is truly a lovely building to enjoy a coffee and great food in. Emily says it’s a special feeling to be part of the chapel’s rebirth. “It boasts many outstanding features, such as stained-glass windows and the old bell tower that echoed through the port to invite the congregation to enjoy their time of worship and gratitude".

TopShelf Leadlights have designed and made all the leadlights for the cafe using the new owners' ideas. It was a challenge and a very enjoyable undertaking. I had lots of freedom with use of color and my own artistic flavor. The owners were thrilled with the results and it has created the ambiance they were hoping for.
